Jio 5G launch date in India, SIM, plans, speed, trial, and everything we know so far

Jio 5G launch in India could be as early as in September

Jio has officially confirmed its 5G launch date in India. The telco will initially roll out its 5G services in key Indian cities and later expand them to other regions. The Jio 5G services are expected to reach every town, talukdar, and tehsil by December 2023. Additionally, the Jio 5G will be based on a Standalone 5G network and have zero dependencies on the 4G infrastructure. This will result in faster connectivity speed and reduced latency. The Jio 5G will be completely made in India and is said to deliver a speed of over 1Gbps. Here’s a quick look at the expected Jio 5G SIM, launch date in India, plans, speed, and more.

Jio 5G launch date in India

The Jio 5G launch date in India is set for October-end. Per RIL chairman Mukesh Ambani, the 5G services will be available starting this Diwali, i.e. October 24th. Key Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata, will be among the first to get the Jio 5G network. This is likely to be expanded to other regions such as Gurugram, Chandigarh, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, and Gandhi Nagar by the end of this year.

The company claims that it has completed 5G rollout planning for 1,000 cities  Furthermore, Jio is working on a data-driven 5G network that will be based on targeted customer consumption revenue using Heat maps, 3D maps and ray-tracing technology for precise coverage planning to target high-consumption and high-perception locations.

With that being said, Jio is likely to offer better 5G services compared to its arch-rivals. The telco spent over Rs 80,000 crore in the recently concluded spectrum auction and acquired the coveted 700MHz band, which is believed to have a wide base coverage, with a range of 6-10 kilometres. Additionally, the Jio has acquired 10 MHz of the band in each of the 22 circles. It is also the only telco to have bought spectrum across bands which are considered key for efficient 5G services globally.

Jio 5G will use standalone network

Interestingly, Jio 5G will be using the standalone (SA) 5G network, instead of non-standalone (NSA), which uses 4G infrastructure. The SA Jio 5G is said to deliver new and powerful services like low latency, massive machine-to-machine communication, 5G voice, Edge computing and network slicing, and the metaverse. “Jio 5G will be the world’s largest and most advanced 5G network. Most operators are deploying a version of 5G, called Non-Standalone 5G, which is essentially a 5G radio signal delivered over an existing 4G infrastructure. This Non-Standalone approach is a hasty way to nominally claim a 5G launch, but it won’t deliver the breakthrough improvements in performance and capability possible with 5G,” per the company.

Jio claims that its 5G connectivity will not be limited to just the privileged. Its aim is to keep the network within the reach of the masses.

Jio 5G SIM

While the company hasn’t announced it yet, the Jio 5G SIMs are likely to be available in the market soon. The existing Jio 4G LTE SIM will not be compatible with the network as the telco is using SA for its 5G services, which has a different infrastructure altogether. This has been the case in countries where 5G services are available in S

Jio 5G phone

It is no secret that Jio is also working on a 5G smartphone The handset is expected to be among the most affordable 5G phones in the country. If rumours are anything to go by, the upcoming Jio 5G phone could be price somewhere between Rs 9,000-Rs 12,000 (around $120 to $160). This will help penetrate the company’s 5G network across the country. Jio is likely to offer the 5G phone bundled with its 5G plan.

Jio 5G plans’ price

It is not confirmed yet, but 5G plans from Jio are expected to be more affordable than its counterpart. If reports are anything to go by, the Jio 5G plans’ price could be the same as 4G. Per Counterpoint Research Analyst Charu Paliwal, the telcos are likely to offer 5G plans at 4G prices to attract more subscribers and encourage upgrades initially. The premium will eventually increase once the network has wide availability and established data speeds.

If that will the case, the Jio 5G prices will undercut its competitors’ 5G prices. The telco has cheaper 4G plans compared to Airtel and Vi.

Jio 5G trial sites

Jio has 5G trial sites live in four cities in India – namely Delhi, Pune, Mumbai and Gujarat, currently. The company has also partnered with OPPO to conduct 5G trials on smartphones in India. Jio is conducting these trials in 700MHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz spectrums. The telecom operator has also successfully conducted trials of connected robotics on its own 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and 5G Standalone (SA) core network.

Jio acquires 700Mhz band in 5G auction (July 28th)

Aakash Ambani-led telco Jio has gone big and grabbed the expensive 700MHz band in the ongoing 5G spectrum auction in India. This means that Jio will be able to offer better network coverage. The 700MHz band is believed to be more efficient when it comes to connectivity in congested regions.

Jio reportedly eyeing Ericsson and Nokia’s 5G telecom gear (July 1st)

Jio seems to be in talk with Nokia and Ericsson about buying 5G telecom gear. For the uninitiated, Ericsson and Jio also partnered previously for 5G trials in Delhi, but that did not happen. According to the reports, the telco sought fresh permission from the government to shift the location of trials to Mumbai and this was granted. Per sources, quick Jio 5G trials with Ericsson are set begin soon.
